Over time, physical fatigue decreases mental focus and severely impairs judgment. Even momentary lapses in focus caused by drowsiness can be deadly on a crowded highway. In fact, there were at least 283 deaths strictly from drowsy driving accidents in 2023. A recent 2025 study reports that more than 1 in 5 crash related fatalities are linked directly to drowsy driving.
Why Truck Drivers Push Through Fatigue
Truck drivers routinely push through exhaustion because they are working against the clock. The modern logistics industry demands rapid delivery times. When a truck driver is physically exhausted, their body experiences several involuntary and highly dangerous failures. The brain takes significantly longer to recognize stopped traffic, drastically delaying perception and braking.
The Threat of Micro Sleeps
The most dangerous symptom of a fatigued truck driver is the occurrence of a micro sleep. This happens when the brain forces the body into a brief period of sleep lasting only three to five seconds. During a micro sleep at highway speeds, a commercial truck travels completely unguided for hundreds of feet. When the driver violently snaps awake as the truck drifts off the road, they frequently jerk the steering wheel in a panic. This aggressive overcorrection often causes an immediate rollover or jackknife event, destroying any vehicles in its path.
